Budget Mombasa Island, Malindi & Lamu Trip

The island Mombasa is Kenya’s second largest metropolis and the main sea gate to East Africa. Mombasa Island is a 5 by 3 km coral outcrop located on Kenya‘s coast on the Indian Ocean, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Part of the city of Mombasa is located on the island, including the Old Town.

DAY 1 – SHANZU

On this day, we shall depart our Nairobi early enough and be transferred to the SGR station. We shall be boarding the 0800 oclock train and arrive in Mombasa Island at 0100 oclock. We shall have our lunch in the Coastal Island of Mombasa then proceed to Shanzu.

Top world class resorts are located in the posh neighborhood of Shanzu that is well known to be peaceful and quiet. Shanzu beach is located approximately 14km from Mombasa CBD and has on numerous occasions, won the hearts of many as one of the top beaches in Mombasa.Hotels on this stretch are closely packed together; there are also plenty of bars and relaxation spots where you can have some time off to reflect and indulge with nature.The beachfronts are exquisite, quiet and relaxing. When you’re on Shanzu beach, make the most of your time because it’s one place you’ll not want to leave in a hurry.

On this day we shall spend relaxing in the Shanzu beaches whole day. Later go back to our Nyali hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 2 MALINDI

We shall leave our hotel very early and visit Malindi.As we drive north to Kilifi through attractive country covered by extensive sisal plantations dotted with huge baobab trees. Cross the scenic creek and continue onto the ancient city of Gedi-a 13th century ruin in the heart of a dense forest. We shall later visit Arabuko Sokoke. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve is a 420 km2 coastal forest in Kenya managed by Kenya Forest Service (KFS). It is the largest and most intact coastal forest in East Africa, with 20% of Kenya’s bird species, 30% butterfly species and at least 24 rare and endemic bird, mammal and butterfly species. Other activities here are forest walks, forest drives, butterfly & bird watching, cycling & picnicking.

Later head to our hotel for dinner evening stay.

DAY 3 MALINDI

We shall spend our day in enjoying the beach.

DAY 4 – LAMU BEACH

On this day we shall go to Lamu for a day trip then we head back to Malindi for dinner and overnight stay.

It feels somewhat adventurous to explore the old city walking around and getting lost in the labyrinth of the small and narrow streets. Lamu’s Old Town is characterized by a variety of different types of houses with influences from Arabia, India, Peru and Europe. You will walk pass houses with large and tall wooden doors, open verandas, curved balconies and beautiful decorative paintings and furniture. At a place where it looks like if time has stood still, surprise yourself by seeing the daily local life. Everywhere you go the residents will welcome you with a big smile. Little kids are playing while their mothers are doing the laundry, see the older children coming home from school and hear people praying in the mosques.

DAY 5 – COPACABANA BEACH, MTWAPA

On this day, after early breakfast we depart Malindi very early and spend our day at Mtwapa. On our way, we shall passby some coastal countryside and its people offer a different perspective to Kenya’s tribal heritage. The tour provides a glimpse into the traditions and cultures of the coastal people with a visit to a Giriama or Digo Village with our local guide. Continue to Kaloleni to visit the local market and thereafter drive to Kenya Marine land on the North coast, which offers an opportunity to observe numerous species of tropical marine life in giant aquariums. A snake park, situated nearby is also visited and you can watch carvers at work producing the famous “Makonde” pieces of art.

Later check-in in our Mtwapa resort for lunch and refreshments.

Mtwapa is a famous town located 16km north of Mombasa city famous for its vibrant nightlife and party scene. Mtwapa is a tourist magnet suburb loved by both foreign and local tourists.I have realized that Mtwapa is associated so much with partying that people forget it also has a nice and quiet beach where you can sit and relax. From the beach, you get the chance to enjoy exotic views of the Indian Ocean and the Mtwapa creek.There are also numerous villas, private residences, restaurants and bars where you can go and have fun. Furthermore, Mtwapa has everything; good accommodation, shopping, banking facilities, entertainment and dining.

Visiting Shimba hill can also be a good plan for this day. Start your day early to manage the park drives of Shimba hills.

The Shimba Hills are a short drive from Mombasa. South of the island, they are reached via the Likoni Ferry and are over a thousand feet high which offers one a view of both the Indian Ocean and the African bush. A visit to the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary is highly recommended and is located about 30 minutes from the glistening beaches of south coast. At Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary you will experience a unique safari in a spectacular landscape. Elephants here never forget. Like them, you’ll always remember Mwaluganje.  Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary 60,000 acres feature dramatic cliffs and forested hills as well as bush land with baobabs – all striking for the wildlife. Apart from the elephant, you also see warthog, impala, bushbuck, sable, Cape buffalo and leopards. Later get back to Mtwapa for overnight at Silver palm spa & resort.

DAY 6 – NAIROBI

Visit Mamba Village then we shall be transferred to the railway station in Mikindani to pick the 03:00pm train back to Nairobi.
