Day 1 – Nairobi – Aberdares
After an early breakfast in your hotel or residence, our driver will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel or a central meeting place and we shall depart for Njabini Forest Station. On arrival we shall meet our guide who’ll take us through a short briefing then we shall begin the hike. The terrain goes through the forest, bamboos, thickets and cold mist in the open areas.
The hike takes from 4-5 hours from an altitude of 2,500m at the forest station. The first 5 km are relatively flat plantation forest followed by bamboo zone. Then follows the alpine zone with tussok grass, giant lobelia and giant heather. When we get to elephants rum one can be able to view Sasumua Dam and Nadakaini dam as well. The rest of the hike is on a quite rocky terraine with the temperatures dropping quickly at an altitude of 3,400 above sea level.
At the summit one can see Kinangop peak, the second highest point on the Aberdares. We shall rest a little then begin the descent which is as tough as the ascent. After conquering the challenge and thoroughly testing our fitness, we shall head to Outspan Hotel in Nyeri for dinner and an overnight stay.
